Earlier this year, Lookey, a Japanese marketing research company, surveyed 400 Generation Z people between the ages of 19 and 23 regarding this year's SNS trends. As 2023 comes to a close Lookey announced the ranking results in the "Gourmet Category".
5. Onigiri Specialty Shop
At number 5, we have onigiri specialty shops. Onigiri are rice balls served plain or with stuffings such as kelp or tuna. These cute rice balls are a staple of any Japanese lunch box, so there's no surprise that they made the cut for trending foods this year.
4. Rice Paper
Next up is rice paper. This food's entry on the list may surprise most, but fried rice paper has been a trend on TikTok and is a tasty but healthy and versatile snack for young Japanese.
3. Shake Udon
Coming third is Shake Udon! It might be a new food for some of those in and outside of Japan and that's because it is. Introduced in May 2023 by chain restaurant Marugame Seimen, Shake Udon is a revolutionary way to eat a Japanese fave. Just shake and go.
2. 10 Yen Bread
Coming at number 2 is the bread with the misleading name that took Japan by storm this year. Filled with gooey cheese, the 10 yen bread is named after its shape, not its price. It usually goes for about 500 yen and can be seen at food stalls at festivals and of course, SNS.
1. Misokin
Topping off the list at number one is Misokin Cup ramen. This cup of ramen with a miso base was produced by Japanese Youtuber Hikakin. It hit convenience stores this year and almost immediately sold out and is still a rarity. Having the name of one of Japan's biggest YouTubers, Misokin is a suitable candidate for the number one spot.
