Japanese Kids' Dreams Unveiled: What Do Elementary and Junior High Students Want to Be When They Grow Up?

Gakken Educational Research Institute recently conducted a survey among elementary and junior high school students to gauge their desired future occupations, revealing significant shifts in popularity among various career choices. The results reflect intriguing trends, including the rise of new aspirations and the evolution of traditional preferences.

Among elementary school boys, "YouTuber and other online streamers" clinched the top spot, followed closely by "police officers" and "athletes (other than baseball, soccer, and swimming)." This marks the third consecutive year that YouTubers have secured the lead, maintaining stable popularity across different age groups.

In contrast, junior high school boys favored "Engineer/Programmer (Mechanical/Technology/IT)" as their top choice, indicating a preference for careers in technology and innovation. Surprisingly, "Internet streamers such as YouTubers" dropped out of the top 10, while traditional professions like "office employee" and "civil servant" surged in popularity.

For elementary school girls, "patissier (cake shop)" retained its reign as the most desired occupation for the seventh consecutive year, resonating across all grade levels. "Nurse" and "Singer/Idol" followed closely behind, reflecting diverse career aspirations among young girls.

However, among junior high school girls, "school teacher/teacher" emerged as the top choice, showcasing a significant leap in popularity from previous years. Meanwhile, "patissier (cake shop)" and "Singer/Idol" experienced declines in ranking, indicating shifting preferences as students transition to higher grades.
